RAB Arrests Three in Dhaka for Abducting and Extorting Businessman
RAB-4 officials have arrested three individuals accused of kidnapping a businessman and his son at knifepoint in the capital’s Kalyanpur area. The suspects, identified as Md. Billal, 35, Md. Jumman, 30, and Sheikh Md. Foysal, 35, were apprehended late Saturday following a targeted operation in the Darus-Salam area.
The incident occurred on the night of July 2, when the victim, Mahfuzur Rahman, a businessman from Sabujbagh, stopped his motorcycle near the Darus-Salam Jame Mosque to purchase water while returning home with his son. According to law enforcement, a group of five to six armed men intercepted the pair, forcibly taking them to the attic of a nearby derelict building.
During the captivity, the perpetrators subjected Rahman to physical abuse and demanded a ransom of 500,000 taka. After searching the victim’s mobile phone and bank accounts and finding insufficient funds, the group coerced him into contacting his relatives to arrange a payment. The victim eventually secured 50,000 taka with the assistance of family members, including his cousin.
Following the extortion, the suspects released the father and son in a CNG-run autorickshaw, but not before seizing their cash, mobile phones, and motorcycle. The assailants issued death threats to the victims, warning them against contacting the police. Rahman required two days of medical treatment at Mugda Medical College Hospital due to the injuries sustained during the abduction.
The arrest followed a formal complaint filed at the Darus-Salam Police Station. Additional Superintendent of Police K.N. Roy Niyati, company commander of RAB-4, stated that investigators identified the suspects by analyzing CCTV footage and intelligence reports.
Authorities described the detainees as habitual criminals involved in extortion, drug trafficking, and territorial disputes across the Mirpur, Darus-Salam, and Shah Ali neighborhoods. The trio faces multiple prior criminal charges, and further legal proceedings are currently underway.
