Vandalism and Theft Reported at Pirojpur Crematorium Temple

Unidentified assailants vandalized a Hindu temple at the Pirojpur municipal crematorium late Sunday night, destroying sacred idols, setting ceremonial items on fire, and stealing valuables. Local residents discovered the desecration on Monday morning and alerted law enforcement.
Sunil Chakraborty, president of the municipal crematorium committee, arrived at the site to find that a Shiva statue had been smashed, and parts of the Kali idol had been dragged outside and burned. Perpetrators forced entry through the main gate, emptying the temple’s donation box and making off with various ritual objects crafted from bronze, brass, and copper. Initial estimates suggest the damage and theft total over 100,000 taka.

Chakraborty condemned the incident, noting that while the theft of temple property is a crime, the intentional destruction of religious idols suggests a deliberate attempt to incite communal tension and strike at the religious sentiments of the local community.
Superintendent of Police Mohammad Manjur Ahmed Siddiqui and Pirojpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shariful Islam visited the scene shortly after the discovery to collect evidence.

According to Officer-in-Charge Shariful Islam, investigators are pursuing two primary lines of inquiry. Police are looking into the incident as both a burglary and a potential act of sabotage to determine if the attack was motivated by malice or broader extremist intent. Authorities have launched a formal investigation and are working to identify and apprehend those responsible.
