United International University’s ‘Hands Outstretched in Love’ book review competition

A special review competition has been organized at the United International University (UIU) of the capital on the book ‘Bhalobasaye Bhakta Haat’ written by Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman. The ‘Media Studies and Journalism’ department of the university is the main organizer of this competition in a joint initiative of SkillUp, UIU and Prothma.com.

A total of 100 students of UIU will get a chance to participate in this competition. On the occasion of this event, 100 books were distributed among interested students at UIU’s own campus located in Madani Avenue-adjacent United City of Dhaka. Students should submit a review of at least 500 to 700 words by June 10.

According to the university authorities, the reviews will be submitted at the specific booth of the university or through e-mail and Google forms. A joint judging panel of Prothma and UIU will select the best three entries from the submitted reviews. At the end of the competition, the best three writers will be given special prizes and certificates through a closing ceremony and the best review will be published in the country’s leading daily newspaper Prothom Alo.

According to the organizers, the registration process will be started soon with the aim of official promotion of the competition and submission of reviews through posters, banners and online groups of the university.

Sheikh Shafiul Islam, Head of UIU’s Media Studies and Journalism Department, said, “This book has made an important contribution in uncovering the outstanding role of our foreign friends, especially writers, singers and cultural workers, in the Liberation War. I would say, the book has fulfilled a historical duty. I think the book review competition will act as a beacon for our students.

Abu Sadat Mohammad Mustansir Billah, director of the public relations office of the university, said, “We want the event to be spread among the students on a wider scale in the future. We hope that this initiative will play an important role in developing reading habits among students.

UIU’s media studies and journalism department lecturer Kazi Kamrun Nahar, Sumaiya Zahid, author and journalist Rahitul Islam and many others were also present at the event.
