Two flowers of art

The front wall of Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts – If you walk along the Lagoa footpath, you will definitely see two flowers – a white or purple color. Flowers bloom throughout the year. The other is yellow tabebuia. Flowering time is Phalgun, meaning Spring. Not only these two flowers, but also a fair number of plants throughout the fine arts premises. The density of trees is so high that the inner houses are not well visible. Some of which can be said to be rare. There are very few such shadowy educational institutions in the heart of the capital. Some of the trees here are memorable.
Sometimes I go inside to see those trees. Even after planting twice, lalsonile tree could not be saved. Carefully planted Rudrapalash disappointed us! Professor Shishir Bhattacharya, who is a tree lover, regrets a lot about this. In 2013, he brought this yellow tabebuia seedling from Kolkata. He had to do a lot of work to keep this tree alive. Finally, the tree has been blooming for four years. He said, the name of the tree in West Bengal is Falguni or Phagun Bau. In 2018, I saw a few nearly century-old trees of this species at Fort Vallore in Vellore, South India. Tabebuia of this species has not been seen anywhere else in the country. The tree located in the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Mymensingh has yellow flowers but is a different species.
The English name of this yellow tabebuia is Caribbean Trumpet Tree or Silver Trumpet Tree. Tabebuia typically (Tabebuia aurea) can grow 15 to 25 feet tall. Leaves are silvery in color, graceful, drooping and drooping stems, trunks with deeply furrowed silvery bark. The tree tops are usually asymmetrical and bushy on two or three main trunks or branches. The leaves are narrow and long, which is an identifying feature of this plant. Its main difference with other tabebuia is the leaves. The narrow-leaved tabebuia is rarely seen. Numerous trumpet or mic-shaped flowers, two to three inches long, golden yellow in color, are borne in clusters at the tips of the branches, sporadically during the flowering season. All leaves fall just before flowering. Apart from flowers, it is a wonderful tree with a combination of crooked trunk, corky bark and silvery leaves. This tabebuia is easy to plant and flower. However, the disadvantage is that the stems and branches are soft, so they are easily uprooted or broken by strong winds.
Yellow tabebuia is accompanied by white or purple coloration. Usually we have to be satisfied with the eye-catching colors of colorful flowers. But only plain colored fragrances can fill our mind. To get an overview of colors, we have to go to Ramna Park, Curzon Hall of Dhaka University and Faculty of Fine Arts premises. Or you can see this flower in various parks and gardens including botanical gardens. Today, due to the long-lasting blooms, variegated colors have become inevitable in horticulture. Because of this, there are numerous variations of colors around the world. More new cultivars are being discovered. But Ixora finlaysoniana is very different from the commonly seen Ixora finlaysoniana. Locally it looks like a shrub or small tree. This dye also differs from other dyes for its sweet aroma. But many people do not know about the fragrance of this flower.
Suravi Rangan can grow up to 8 meters high. Leaf blades ovate to ovate, smooth and rounded at the base. It is more common in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar districts of the country. Apart from this, our nearby countries India, Sri Lanka and Myanmar are also easy to see. Propagation is by seed and cuttings.
