Three arrested with 3.4 million counterfeit notes, planned circulation ahead of Eid: Police

Police have arrested three individuals and seized 3.4 million fake Bangladeshi Taka in separate operations in Dhaka’s Uttara and Gazipur areas on Wednesday. Law enforcement also recovered equipment used in the counterfeiting operation.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Mojibur Rahman, 38, Md. Dulal Mridha, 40, and Md. Mamun, 25. According to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the members of this inter-district syndicate were preparing to circulate the counterfeit currency in markets and cattle fairs ahead of Eid al-Adha.

Details of the operation were revealed on Thursday at a press conference held at the DMP’s media center on Minto Road. Md. Shofiqul Islam, Additional Commissioner of DMP’s Detective Branch, stated that based on a tip-off, Mojibur Rahman was apprehended around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday in front of the Samabay Bazar (BDR) Market in Uttara East police station area. At the time of his arrest, authorities recovered 400,000 fake Taka and 40,000 Taka in genuine currency intended for sale. Following Mojibur’s information, an operation was conducted around 2:00 p.m. in the Bashon police station area of Gazipur Metropolitan City, leading to the arrest of Dulal Mridha and Mamun. From them, 3 million counterfeit Taka were seized.
Shofiqul Islam further explained that intelligence gathered from the arrested suspects led to the recovery of counterfeiting tools, including a laptop, three color printers, a roll of gold-colored foil paper, 200 security tags, and watermarked paper.

DB officials indicated that the apprehended individuals are active members of an inter-district counterfeit currency syndicate. During preliminary interrogation, they confessed to being involved in producing fake money for an extended period. These counterfeit notes were reportedly supplied to various regions, including Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur. The syndicate had planned to distribute the latest batch of fake currency through accomplices at cattle markets and commercial centers in anticipation of Eid al-Adha.
The DMP stated that the arrested individuals face multiple cases in Dhaka and other districts across the country. A case has been filed against them under the Special Powers Act at the Uttara East police station.
