In Chittagong city, the police had to be blocked for almost six hours while taking a person arrested on the charge of attempted rape of a four-year-old child to the police station. Police could not bring the situation under control despite firing tear gas shells, sound grenades, blank bullets. Later, when the power went out in the area, the law and order forces removed the person from the spot.

The incident took place in Chairmanghata area of ​​Baklia police station of Chittagong city from 4 pm to 10:30 pm on Thursday. After the accused was taken away, angry people set a police car on fire.

According to the police and local sources, Monir Hossain, who is accused of trying to rape a four-year-old child in Chairmanghata area, was arrested by the police around 4 pm. While taking him to the police station, the angry people demanded that the accused should be handed over to them. At one point, hundreds of people surrounded the police car. The police personnel retreated to bring the situation under control. At this time the protestors started chanting different slogans.

Additional police were deployed to control the situation. Police fired tear gas shells and sound grenades around 8 pm. At that time, bricks were thrown at the police by the protesters. Later the police tried to disperse the crowd by firing blank rounds.

A relative of the victim of the incident told Prothom Alo, “We want the rapist to be hanged.” I will not give it to the police.

When the power went out in the area around 10:30 pm, the police managed to take the accused out of a building and took them into their custody. However, agitated people occupied the road and set fire to protest.

Going to the spot at around 10:30 pm, it was seen that the local people were expressing their anger about the situation on the road. According to them, even if there is a case, the accused may come out on bail after a few days, and the trial process will also be lengthy.

Meanwhile, Monir Hossain is claimed to have confessed his crime after being detained by local people in the afternoon. In a video circulating on various social media, it can be seen that he confessed to raping the child while in police custody. However, Prothom Alo could not verify its authenticity.

Claiming that tear shells, sound grenades and blank bullets were fired in self-defence, Assistant Commissioner of City Police (Media) Aminur Rashid told Prothom Alo around 10:30 p.m. that the police strategically removed the accused and took them into custody. But he did not say where he was kept. Aminur Rashid said efforts were on to calm the situation and people were urged not to take the law into their own hands.
