Suspect remanded to jail in Dhaka political leader murder case

A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court has ordered Al-Amin Mahin to be remanded into custody following the conclusion of a four-day interrogation regarding the murder of Billal Hossain Talukdar, a former convenor of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal’s Ramna unit. Magistrate Jewel Rana issued the detention order on Sunday after the police investigation officer, Inspector Atikul Alam Khandakar, submitted a formal request to keep the suspect in jail.
During the proceedings, prosecutors confirmed that the investigation into the high-profile homicide is ongoing. In his filing to the court, Inspector Khandakar stated that while the suspect provided some information during his initial remand, the details were fragmented and lacked consistency. Investigators are currently conducting a rigorous verification process to determine the reliability of these claims, which they believe will be vital to the case. The police maintained that keeping the suspect in custody is necessary to prevent potential interference with the investigation and to mitigate the risk of the suspect attempting to flee.

The legal action stems from an incident on June 8, when Billal Hossain was fatally attacked behind the Arafat Market in the capital’s Mouchak area. According to the case file, the victim had been involved in a long-standing dispute with local businessman Didarul Islam Babu and his associates over the collection of protection money from local traders.
Evidence presented by the prosecution alleges that on the evening of the attack, Didarul Islam Babu lured Hossain to a meeting under the guise of an arbitration session. Once there, the victim was cornered by a group of assailants, including the suspect and others identified as Riazul Hasan and Al-Amin Mahin. The attackers allegedly beat Hossain with iron rods, cricket stumps, and sharp weapons. Prosecutors state that the fatal blow was delivered to the victim’s chest by Didarul Islam Babu.

Hossain was rushed to the Islami Bank Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead by physicians. Following the incident, the victim’s wife, Asia Khatun, filed a murder case at the Ramna Model Police Station, naming 21 individuals, including Babu, as suspects. Police apprehended Mahin in Dhaka last Monday, leading to his four-day initial remand before Sunday’s court appearance.
