Authorities in Chapainawabganj have filed a formal police complaint against a non-governmental organization following an incident that left several students ill after consuming meals provided under the government’s school feeding project.

The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the Sadar Upazila Primary Education Committee on Thursday, following reports that 18 students from Salim Dolpara Government Primary School fell ill on Wednesday after eating bread and eggs provided by the NGO, Gram Unnayan Karma (GAK). The organization is responsible for supplying food to 213 primary schools across the sub-district.

Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Maruf Afzal confirmed that GAK has been ordered to suspend bread distribution for 15 days. While the NGO is permitted to continue supplying eggs and bananas, these items will now undergo mandatory quality inspections by local school committees composed of parents.

Of the 18 students affected by the contaminated food, 10 required hospitalization at the 250-bed Chapainawabganj District Hospital. Hospital authorities confirmed that all affected children were discharged by Thursday afternoon after their conditions improved.

Samples of the food served during the incident have been collected and are being sent to a Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) laboratory in Dhaka for analysis. Officials noted that this is not the first time GAK has faced scrutiny regarding food safety; however, the results from previous laboratory tests requested by the administration remain pending.

Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ekramul Hossain confirmed that school headmaster Durul Hoda filed a General Diary (GD) on Thursday morning regarding the incident. Police have pledged to initiate necessary legal proceedings as the investigation into the supply chain lapses continues.
