Sheikh Hasina and 10 others charged with crimes against humanity in 2018 extrajudicial killing case

A formal indictment has been filed at the International Crimes Tribunal-2 in a case concerning the death of Ekramul Haq, a former municipal councilor in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. The prosecution leveled charges of crimes against humanity against 11 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury alongside judges Md. Manjurul Basid and Noor Mohammad Shahriar Kabir, officially accepted the charges on Sunday. The court has scheduled the next hearing for August 25.

The charges follow the 2018 death of Haq, who served as the president of the Teknaf Upazila Jubo League for 12 years. He was killed on the night of May 26, 2018, during what authorities at the time described as a “gunfight.”
Beyond the former prime minister, the indictment names several high-profile officials from the previous administration. The list of defendants includes former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, and former lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi.

The security apparatus is also heavily implicated, with charges brought against former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed and a group of former Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officials. These include former Additional Director General Md. Anwar Latif Khan, former Director Brigadier General Md. Mahbub Alam, former Commander Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed, former Company Commander Major (retd) Ruhul Amin, and former Company Commander Lieutenant Commander Md. Ashekur Rahman. Additionally, Squadron Leader Nazmus Sakib Mahmud, a former member of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), has been named as a defendant in the case.
