Rajshahi youth group distributes gifts to celebrate Eid with community members

A group of dedicated youths in the remote village of Islabari, located in the Bagmara upazila of Rajshahi, has turned the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations into a source of unexpected joy for the community’s most vulnerable residents. Between Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, members of the local volunteer organization “Islabari Torun Star” visited door-to-door to distribute new clothing and holiday gifts to nearly 200 impoverished villagers.

Recognizing the importance of preserving the dignity of those in need, the group eschewed public ceremonies in favor of discreet, private deliveries. For many residents, such as those in Islabari’s northern neighborhood, the gesture provided a rare opportunity to own new garments, a luxury that remains beyond their financial reach due to the village’s heavy reliance on subsistence farming.

The organization was established in 2022 by a handful of local residents who sought to mitigate the economic hardships faced by their neighbors. The collective has since grown to include approximately 40 members, many of whom reside in Dhaka or other major cities for education and employment. Remarkably, the group operates entirely on self-funded contributions from its members, refusing outside donations to maintain their non-political mandate.

Beyond their holiday outreach, the group maintains a robust, year-round social welfare program. Every three months, they coordinate visits from specialist physicians to provide free medical consultations and medication to villagers, complete with a systematic health registry for ongoing patient care. Furthermore, the organization actively subsidizes educational expenses for impoverished students, provides guidance for university entrance examinations, and offers financial assistance for the weddings of young women from low-income families.

General Secretary Md. Zakirul Islam noted that the group is committed to addressing the five core pillars of basic human welfare: food, clothing, shelter, health, and education. Their sustained impact has drawn praise from local leaders, including educator Md. Sekendar Ali, who remarked that the youths’ selflessness and organizational discipline serve as a powerful example for the rest of society to follow.
