The funeral of former Bhairab municipal mayor and freedom fighter Fakhrul Alam has triggered significant political tension in Kishoreganj, marking the first time in months that local leaders of the banned Awami League have appeared together in public. The incident, which took place on Monday at the KB Pilot High School grounds, saw party members chanting the “Joy Bangla” slogan, a move that local observers say has reignited volatile political discourse in the region.
As reported by Prothom Alo, the funeral service drew a diverse crowd, including leaders from various political parties, among them representatives from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). While the gathering was ostensibly a religious ceremony to honor the three-time mayor, who had no criminal cases filed against him and remained in the area throughout the recent political upheaval, the political undertones were palpable. During the service, speakers from the Awami League used the platform to address the crowd, while local BNP leaders also paid their respects.

The public display of solidarity by Awami League members and the vocalization of their party slogan quickly drew criticism from rival factions. Local BNP leaders alleged that the event was manipulated to demonstrate political viability and signal a reorganization of the party’s ranks, despite the recent ban on its activities. In response, a senior Awami League figure defended the use of the “Joy Bangla” slogan, asserting that as a liberation-era mantra, it remains distinct from the party’s current political status.
The fallout from the gathering became apparent within 24 hours. On Tuesday night, local police launched a series of operations, raiding the residences of several prominent local Awami League officials, including the party’s former general secretary and the former municipal general secretary. During these maneuvers, police detained Nabi Hossain, a worker associated with the Juba League’s volunteer wing, the Sramik League.

Bhairab Police Station officials confirmed the detention but provided limited details regarding the scope of the operations. Sub-inspector Emdadul Kabir stated that while Hossain has not yet been formally charged in relation to Monday’s events, he is expected to be processed in connection with cases involving attacks on students and protesters that occurred prior to the August 5 government transition.
For the local political landscape, the incident serves as a flashpoint, highlighting the sensitivities of public assembly in a post-revolutionary environment. While the Awami League camp characterized the funeral as a solemn tribute to a freedom fighter, the subsequent police activity and the public reaction underscore the ongoing efforts to navigate the transition in local power dynamics.
