Police rescue kidnapped autorickshaw driver held captive and chained over debt in Noakhali

Police rescued a 37-year-old auto-rickshaw driver in Noakhali’s Subarnachar upazila on Saturday after he was held captive and tortured for two days over an unpaid debt. The victim, identified as Md. Ripon, was found shackled in a residence in the Char Majid Bhuiyarhat area following a coordinated intervention by local authorities and community leaders.
According to police and local residents, the incident stems from a failed goat-trading partnership between the victim and a 28-year-old man, also named Md. Ripon. The accused allegedly claimed the victim owed him 170,000 taka from their previous business dealings. Seeking to recover the funds, the accused lured the victim to a house on Friday, where he was chained by his legs and subjected to repeated physical abuse.
The victim, who relocated to Subarnachar from Bhola’s Manpura upazila, stated that he had been working as an auto-rickshaw driver to repay mounting debts following the collapse of his former business. He reported that during his two-day confinement, his captors denied him both food and basic liberties. Family members also alleged that two other individuals who arrived at the scene to search for the victim were temporarily detained by the accused and his associates.
The accused has since fled the area, and his mobile phone remains powered off, making it impossible to obtain his perspective on the allegations. Reporting on the rescue, Officer-in-Charge of Char Jabbar Police Station, Md. Rafiqul Hasan, confirmed that the victim was held against his will specifically to coerce the repayment of the debt.
Police have instructed the victim to file a formal written complaint regarding the abduction and assault. Authorities stated that once the complaint is processed, a full investigation will be launched to ensure legal action is taken against those involved in the torture.
