A 21-year-old police constable died in an apparent suicide at the Public Order Management (POM) East barracks in Dhaka’s Demra area late Thursday night. The deceased, identified as Saidul Islam, was discovered by fellow officers inside his seventh-floor dormitory room.

According to officials from the Demra police, the incident came to light around midnight when a colleague found the door to Saidul’s room locked from the inside. Despite attempts to gain entry, the room remained secured, prompting officers to alert the local police station. Upon arrival, authorities broke down the door to find Saidul hanging from the ceiling fan with a cloth tied around his neck.

The officer was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where attending physicians declared him dead. Police officials noted that preliminary evidence and the circumstances surrounding the scene suggest the death was a case of suicide.

Saidul, a native of Lemua North Chandpur in Feni Sadar, had served in the police force for approximately nine months. Inspector Md. Faruk of the DMCH police camp confirmed that the body has been transferred to the hospital morgue to undergo a post-mortem examination.
