Police charge over 100 individuals following banned student league protest in Netrokona

Police have registered a criminal case against 105 individuals following an unauthorized flash protest by members of the banned student organization, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in Netrokona’s Purbadhala upazila. The case, filed on Saturday afternoon by local Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal leader Moslem Uddin Fakir, has led to the formal arrest of three suspects initially detained during an overnight police operation.

According to police records, the primary suspect named in the case is BCL activist Jahidul Hassan, alias Akash Mir. Investigators have identified 79 other named suspects, with an additional 25 unidentified individuals also facing charges. The crackdown followed a brief, high-visibility demonstration held on the Netrokona-Mymensingh highway near Narandia Bazar on Friday morning.

Witnesses and local authorities reported that the rally, which lasted approximately five minutes, involved participants arriving on motorcycles, easy bikes, and CNG-run autorickshaws. While many participants attempted to conceal their identities using masks and cloth wraps, video footage of the protest was shared extensively on social media, including on a verified BCL Facebook page and accounts belonging to local Awami League affiliates.

The footage reveals the demonstration was led by Purbadhala Upazila BCL Joint General Secretary Muntasir Masud Khan and Jahidul Hassan. Participants carried banners displaying slogans invoking former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Shortly after the protest, police conducted raids across the region, resulting in the detention of three men: former Vishkakuni Union Jubo League organizing secretary Fazlul Karim, and activists Anwar Hossain Talukdar and Anwar Hossain.

Officer-in-Charge of Purbadhala Police Station, Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, confirmed that the three detained men have been formally arrested and presented before a court. Law enforcement officials stated that follow-up operations are currently underway to apprehend the remaining suspects identified in the case.
