Police arrest suspect following alleged gang rape in Sylhet

Police in Sylhet’s Bishwanath upazila have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with the abduction and gang rape of a 36-year-old woman. The suspect, identified as Gayas Mia, also known as Geda, was taken into custody on Wednesday and subsequently remanded to judicial custody by a local court.

The arrest follows a formal complaint filed by the victim at the Bishwanath Police Station on Wednesday morning. In the filing, the woman identified four named suspects and one unidentified accomplice. Alongside Gayas Mia, who resides in Hayatargaon village, the police have named Ashik Mia of Alamnagar, Saidur Rahman of Hayatargaon, and Amir Ali of Bottola as suspects in the case.

According to police records and the victim’s statement, the incident began Tuesday night when the woman hired a CNG-powered autorickshaw from the Chandipur area of South Surma, intending to travel to Chhatak. Saidur Rahman, who was operating the vehicle, reportedly diverted the route and forcibly took the woman to a residence in Alamnagar village instead of her intended destination. Once at the location, the suspects allegedly held the woman against her will and subjected her to a gang assault.

The victim was able to alert local residents to her plight around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Law enforcement officers responded to the distress call and successfully rescued her from the property. She was subsequently transported to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where she is currently receiving medical treatment.

Bishwanath Police Station officer-in-charge Gazi Mahbubur Rahman confirmed that an investigation is actively underway. Following the initial arrest of the primary suspect, police teams have launched operations to locate and apprehend the remaining individuals named in the case.
