Police arrest man for murder of day laborer over 200 taka debt in Khulna

Khulna police have arrested 37-year-old Jainal Abedin Gain in connection with the murder of 45-year-old day laborer Dalim Gazi, whose body was discovered on the veranda of a mosque last month.
The victim’s body was found on the morning of May 24 at the Baitul Ma’mur Jame Mosque, located near the Khulna-Satkhira highway in the Koiya Bazar area. Local residents alerted authorities after discovering the scene, where police subsequently recovered a blood-stained brick believed to be the murder weapon. A case was filed by the victim’s family at Harintana Police Station shortly after the discovery.
Acting on intelligence and evidence gathered from CCTV footage, law enforcement apprehended the suspect on Saturday afternoon near a labor hub on Vidhan Road. Abedin, a resident of Satkhira’s Kaliganj upazila, had been on the run since the incident.
According to Harintana Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Helal Uddin, the suspect confessed to the killing during preliminary interrogation. Abedin admitted that the motive stemmed from a dispute over a 200-taka loan. He stated that he attacked the sleeping victim with a brick at approximately 4:00 a.m. on the day of the murder before stealing 4,000 taka from Gazi’s clothing.
Following the crime, Abedin had been hiding at his home in an attempt to evade capture. Police are currently conducting further investigations to determine if anyone else was involved in the crime, and legal proceedings against the suspect are underway.
