Police arrest man after CCTV captures assault of woman in Comilla

Police in Comilla have arrested a man accused of raping a mentally disabled woman in the Sadar Dakshin sub-district, a case that gained public attention after security camera footage of the assault surfaced on social media.
The incident occurred in the early hours of June 30 near the Bijoypur Bazar area on the Comilla-Noakhali regional highway. According to authorities, the victim was sleeping on the sidewalk when the suspect approached her at approximately 4:08 a.m. CCTV footage shows the assailant, identified as Khokon—locally known as “Langra Khokon”—assaulting the woman despite her attempts to resist. The crime was discovered after a local security guard encountered the woman shortly after the suspect fled the scene.

Following the circulation of the footage, police launched an investigation and conducted a series of raids. Officer-in-Charge of the Comilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station, Rakibul Islam, confirmed that officers apprehended the suspect on Saturday night in the Jholom area of the neighboring Barura sub-district. The victim has since been rescued and placed under police protection, and formal legal proceedings are underway.
Local residents have described the suspect as a habitual gambler known for operating illegal betting dens in the region. While some reports identified Khokon as a political activist affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), local party leaders clarified that he does not hold an official position within the organization.

In a statement regarding the arrest, a local BNP representative condemned the assault and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement. The party official further stated that internal organizational action would be taken against Khokon for his conduct.
