PM Rahman pledges climate-resilient agriculture and major reforestation to combat environmental crisis

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced a strategic shift toward prioritizing research, innovation, and training to combat the escalating impacts of climate change. Emphasizing the need for a modern and resilient agricultural framework, the Prime Minister stated that a comprehensive action plan is essential to safeguard the nation’s food security against increasingly volatile environmental conditions.

The statement, issued ahead of World Environment Day on Friday, underscored that climate change represents one of the most significant global challenges facing humanity. Rahman noted that the consequences—ranging from rising sea levels and heatwaves to irregular rainfall and frequent natural disasters—are profoundly disrupting economies and human lives on a global scale.

According to the Climate Risk Index 2026, Bangladesh remains among the most vulnerable nations due to its geographical location and high population density, despite its negligible contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. The Prime Minister highlighted that the increased salinity, declining agricultural productivity, and the displacement of populations due to extreme weather pose critical threats to the country’s development trajectory.

To address these vulnerabilities, the government is currently implementing a forward-looking policy framework anchored by the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). These efforts prioritize coastal protection, social forestry, disaster preparedness, and nature-based solutions to assist displaced communities.

As part of a broader commitment to sustainable development, the government has launched an ambitious initiative to plant 250 million trees over the next five years, alongside a project to excavate and re-excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals nationwide. Furthermore, Rahman indicated that Bangladesh is actively exploring opportunities within the global carbon market while scaling up renewable energy, green industrialization, and eco-friendly urban waste management systems.

Reflecting on the United Nations Environment Programme’s theme for this year, “Climate Action,” the Prime Minister stressed that the urgency of the global climate crisis demands a unified response. He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to foster a green, safe, and climate-resilient nation through collective responsibility and enhanced public awareness.
