PBI investigation links college student murder to extortion plot following failed relationship

A chilling murder plot orchestrated by a former girlfriend has been detailed by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in a recently published volume documenting high-profile, unsolved criminal cases. The victim, Ismail Hossain—known as Emon—was a college student whose life was cut short in Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila on May 13, 2021, the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.

According to PBI investigators, the incident was far from a spontaneous act of violence. Emon had been in a relationship with a high school student, and the pair had parted ways before the murder. Tensions escalated when the young woman became engaged to another man, prompting Emon to threaten the release of intimate photos and videos he had acquired during their relationship. Seeking to prevent the dissemination of the material, the woman conspired with her fiancé, Kamruzzaman, along with her uncle and another female accomplice, to eliminate Emon.

The investigation revealed a meticulously planned “death trap” that spanned two kilometers and unfolded over approximately four and a half hours. On the afternoon of Eid, Emon met his former girlfriend and her female companion at the Iliyas Ahmed Chowdhury Degree College field. Before the meeting, the conspirators had secured a knife and soft drinks spiked with sedatives.

After Emon consumed the drugged beverage at the college grounds, the group transported him via autorickshaw toward the old ferry terminal area. Once at the riverbank, a confrontation ensued regarding the compromising digital files. The former girlfriend initiated the attack by stabbing Emon in the throat twice with a knife. Her fiancé, Kamruzzaman, then took the weapon to inflict further injuries before the pair shoved Emon’s body into the Arial Khan River.

The victim’s body was discovered the following evening, leading to a lengthy investigation that eventually transitioned from the local Shibchar police to the PBI. Following her arrest, the primary suspect provided a judicial confession detailing the roles each conspirator played in the execution of the plan.

PBI Chief and Additional Inspector General Mostafa Kamal noted that the murder was the culmination of a deliberate, coordinated effort rather than an impulsive reaction to conflict. Each individual involved operated under a shared intent, having lured the victim to a pre-arranged location with the specific goal of ending his life.
