Over 100 Injured During Qurbani Rituals and Meat Processing

The emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) treated 115 individuals on Thursday as festive preparations for Eid-ul-Adha took a painful turn. The victims, ranging from local residents to those traveling from surrounding districts, arrived throughout the day suffering from deep lacerations sustained while sacrificing livestock and processing meat.

According to hospital staff, the influx of patients began in the morning and intensified as the day progressed, reaching 85 cases by early afternoon before climbing to over 100 by sunset. The injuries were largely caused by sharp blades, knives, and heavy-duty cleavers. While the majority of those treated were discharged following primary care, two patients were admitted with severe trauma requiring further medical intervention.

Medical professionals at the scene reported that many of the patients who arrived from outside Dhaka had initially sought treatment at local health complexes, only to be referred to the capital due to the depth of their wounds. Among the hospitalized is a patient suffering from internal abdominal hemorrhaging caused by a direct strike from a sacrificial animal’s horn.

The atmosphere at the emergency department reflected the scale of the incidents, with the facility’s waiting rooms and surgery areas filled with individuals bearing blood-stained clothing and bandaged limbs. Patients recounted a variety of mishaps, ranging from accidental contact with professional slaughterers’ knives to injuries caused by cattle breaking free from restraints during the ritual process.

Dr. Sanjay Barua, who was on duty during the afternoon, confirmed that nearly three-quarters of the emergency intake throughout the day were directly linked to sacrificial activities. Despite the high volume of incidents, the medical team continued to process the surge of patients, performing emergency X-rays and surgical procedures for those with the most critical nerve and tendon damage.
