Nationwide book reading festival: 145 readers-students got awards

The year-long book reading program was organized by the National Book Center with readers and students from schools and colleges across the country. The closing ceremony and prize distribution ceremony of this festival was held today Monday at the music and dance hall of Shilpakala Academy of the capital.
A total of 145 people from different private libraries of the country who participated in reading books were awarded in the closing ceremony. Out of these 20 students were awarded as winners.

As a prize, each of the top 20 winners will be given a book worth Tk 3,000, a prize bond of Tk 3,000 and a certificate. Apart from this, each of the remaining 125 students who participated in the final phase were encouraged with a book worth Tk 1,000, a prize bond of Tk 1,000 and a certificate.
Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Minister of the Ministry of Culture, was present as the chief guest in the event. He said that the country’s education, economy, culture and state institutions have been destroyed during the long 18-year fascist rule. Patriotic citizens and youth should come forward to bring the country back to the right track from this wreckage.

Referring to the July coup in his speech, the minister said that the young generation raised their voices against fascism by creating deep communication through Facebook. At first they wanted change, but later they took a bullet to demand the transformation of the entire state system, economy and distribution system. Even after killing people from helicopters, this fascism fell because the common people of Dhaka took to the streets. He termed the July mass coup as historic and urged researchers to do more research on the coup.
Referring to the priority of the present government in the formation of the country, the minister said, “The main priority of the government is to completely eradicate corruption and drugs from the country.”
The organizers said that a total of 647 students from 72 private libraries in different regions of the country participated in this event. The competition was organized by dividing the students into two age groups.
Humayun Ahmed’s science fiction book ‘Love for you’ was given to school level students and Zaheer Raihan’s famous novel ‘Arek Falgun’ to college and university students. After reading the book, a review or written opinion is taken from them.
Top 145 candidates are selected based on written application. Then an oral test was taken at the National Book Center on June 8, 9 and 10 of this month. From there, the top 10 from the two groups and a total of 20 were announced as the final winners based on the judges’ marks.
The closing ceremony of the festival in the morning started with the performance of the national anthem. The National Anthem was performed by the students of Border Library in Dhaka. Later, the readers and students of Kamal Smriti Library in Dhaka gave a group recitation.
Among the judges of the book reading program were writer and professor Kazi Mostak Gausul Haque, fiction writer and journalist Shahnaz Munni, writer and organizer Sabidin Ibrahim.
In the event, writer and professor Kazi Mostak Gausul highlighted the essence of Humayun Ahmed’s book ‘Love for you’. According to him, it is not just science fiction, but a unique love story of Scientist Fiha’s sacrifice for the world. The book’s clever scientific concepts will inspire young readers to be science-minded and world-loving.
In his speech, emphasizing on the proper use of technology in the era of artificial intelligence, Mostak Ghausul Haque said that machines are for the welfare of people, not people for machines. He urged the students to take care of the only green planet Earth and return to the pages of the book again and again.
Deputy Director of the National Book Center. Afsana Begum, director of the National Book Center, gave a welcome speech at the event organized by Farid Uddin government. He said that the main purpose of this event is to awaken the reading skills of the youth.
Afsana Begum said that if the government’s national library policy is implemented, the scope of reading circles, training and book fairs will increase across the country, and through this, a prosperous reading society will be built across the country with private libraries in the coming days.
Secretary of the Ministry of Culture Kaniz Mawla presided over the event. He talks about the selection of contemporary books to make Zen-Ji book-oriented. He said that the tastes and thoughts of the current ‘Gen-G’ generation are different. So instead of forcing old books to turn them towards books, they should be presented with suitable books.
