Narsingdi man arrested for killing wife and burying body in local graveyard

A 42-year-old man was arrested in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi upazila on Wednesday night after he allegedly killed his wife and buried her body in a local graveyard. The suspect, Sharif Mia, reportedly attempted to cover up the crime by filing a missing person report with the police.
Police identified the victim as 38-year-old Jahanara Begum. The couple, along with their eight-year-old daughter, resided in Noyakandi village. Sharif, a native of Bhogirathpur, worked at a local restaurant.
According to police and family members, the couple had a history of domestic disputes. Authorities said the confrontation occurred on Monday afternoon near a tube well at their residence. During an argument, Sharif allegedly struck Jahanara, causing her to lose balance and strike her head against the tube well. She lost consciousness, and Sharif moved her into the house, where she eventually died.
Sharif told investigators that he buried his wife’s body in a nearby graveyard under the cover of darkness to avoid detection. The following morning, when neighbors inquired about Jahanara’s whereabouts, Sharif claimed she had gone to Araihazar market to shop and failed to return, leaving her mobile phone at home.
Suspicion mounted when Sharif was seen loitering near the graveyard on Tuesday and Wednesday. Local residents confronted him near the site on Wednesday night and alerted the Madhabdi police. During interrogation, Sharif confessed to killing his wife and burying the remains.
Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Madhabdi Police Station, confirmed the arrest, stating that Sharif is being held under section 54 of the penal code pending a formal murder case to be filed by the victim’s family.
Authorities have initiated the process of exhuming the body in the presence of a magistrate. The remains will be sent to the morgue for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. Sharif will be produced before the court as part of the ongoing investigation.
