Narayanganj health worker hospitalized following assault by local political leaders brother

A medical officer at the Araihazar Upazila Health Complex in Narayanganj was hospitalized with severe injuries on Sunday following an altercation with the brother of a local political leader. Abdullah Al Kamal, a sub-assistant community medical officer, was assaulted by Billal Hossain—the brother of Araihazar Upazila BNP President Yusuf Ali Bhuiyan—and his associates, sparking a brief work stoppage by hospital staff.

The incident occurred after Billal Hossain brought his wife, Firoza Begum, to the hospital’s emergency department complaining of severe abdominal pain. According to hospital officials, Kamal provided initial treatment and instructed Hossain to purchase an injection from an outside pharmacy. While Hossain was away, the medical officer attended to another critical patient. Upon returning, Hossain allegedly became agitated by the delay, leading to a heated argument that escalated into a physical assault involving Hossain and his companions.

Staff members and hospital security guards intervened to rescue Kamal, who was initially transported to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital. After finding no available beds, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

In response to the violence, doctors at the facility halted outpatient services and other routine medical care for several hours, maintaining only emergency operations. The protest caused significant disruption for patients seeking care. The work stoppage concluded around 1:00 p.m. after Araihazar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Asadur Rahman and local police officials arrived at the scene and pledged a thorough investigation into the matter.

Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sabjel Hossain confirmed that authorities are aware of the assault but noted that no formal written complaint had been filed as of Sunday afternoon. Police have stated that legal proceedings will be initiated once an official complaint is received.

Yusuf Ali Bhuiyan, the Upazila BNP president, disputed the allegations against his brother. He claimed that the medical officer was absent when his sister-in-law arrived in an unconscious state and argued that the incident was merely a minor scuffle triggered by a lack of proper care. He stated that his sister-in-law remains hospitalized and insisted that medical services at the facility have since returned to normal.
