Narail student protest leaders file police complaint over alleged cash bounties for physical attacks

Police in Narail have launched an investigation following allegations that bounties ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 taka were offered for physical attacks on leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Amirul Islam, the member secretary of the movement’s district branch, filed a formal complaint at the Narail Sadar Police Station on Monday night.
The complaint names 11 individuals, including Mizanur Rahman and Sourav Karmakar of the Bangabandhu Jatiya Parishad’s Narail chapter, along with former Lohagara Upazila Chhatra League leader Milon Jamaddar and eight others. According to the document, the suspects are accused of circulating inflammatory content and fabricated videos on social media platforms.

Amirul Islam stated that the threats to his life and the lives of his colleagues have been issued by individuals allegedly operating from abroad or undisclosed locations. He emphasized that the financial incentives offered for violence have created an atmosphere of extreme insecurity. While he underscored the movement’s commitment to seeking legal recourse, he noted that they remain prepared to take further action should authorities fail to provide sufficient protection.
Contacted by Prothom Alo regarding the allegations, one of the named individuals, Abdullah Al Jaber, denied the claims, describing them as baseless and a form of harassment. He further stated that he was unfamiliar with both the complainant and the other individuals listed in the police report. Attempts to reach the other accused persons for comment were unsuccessful.

Officer-in-Charge of Narail Sadar Police Station, Ajay Kumar Kundu, confirmed the receipt of the written complaint. He stated that the department has initiated a formal investigation into the matter and vowed to take appropriate legal action based on the findings.
