Editors Council condemns assault on journalists at Jamaat-e-Islami rally
The Editors' Council has issued a strong condemnation following an assault on journalists covering a rally organized by Jamaat-e-Islami in the Dhanmondi 32 area of the capital. The organization described the attack as a direct violation of press freedom, the right to gather information, and the principles of free expression.
In a formal statement released Thursday, Council President Nurul Kabir and General Secretary Dewan Hanif Mahmud expressed their outrage regarding the June 23 incident. While Jamaat-e-Islami has since characterized the confrontation as a misunderstanding and pledged an internal investigation, the council maintained that there is no justification for violence against media professionals performing their duties.
The Editors' Council has demanded a swift, impartial, and credible inquiry to identify those responsible and ensure they face exemplary punishment. Furthermore, the council called upon the relevant authorities to guarantee a secure environment that allows journalists to carry out their professional responsibilities without fear of harassment or physical harm.
