Man arrested for murder of youth in Mymensingh over alleged illicit affair

MYMENSINGH — Police have arrested a 31-year-old man, Habijur Fakir, in connection with the murder of a 20-year-old youth whose body was discovered inside sacks along the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Mymensingh.

The Mymensingh District Police confirmed the arrest in a press statement issued on Wednesday morning. According to investigators, the suspect confessed to the killing during interrogation and provided a formal statement to a local court on Monday.

The investigation began after the victim’s body was recovered late Thursday night near the Bidyaganj Ferry Ghat in Kustia Union of Mymensingh Sadar Upazila. Authorities identified the deceased as Miran, a resident of Kutuber Char in the Bahadurabad Union of Jamalpur’s Dewanganj Upazila, using his national identification card and a phone number found in his clothing.

Following the discovery, the victim’s brother filed a murder case against unidentified suspects at the Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station last Friday. Law enforcement officers utilized telecommunications data and digital surveillance to track the victim’s recent communications, which led them to the suspect.

On Sunday night, police conducted an operation in the Kutuber Char area of Dewanganj, resulting in the arrest of Habijur Fakir. Under questioning, the suspect stated that he had discovered Miran in a compromising situation with his wife at his residence on the night of July 28. Habijur admitted to killing the victim, tying his legs with rope, and concealing the body in two plastic sacks before disposing of it in the Brahmaputra River at approximately 1:00 a.m.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Station, Mohammad Shibirul Islam, confirmed that the motive behind the murder was an alleged extramarital affair between the victim and the suspect’s wife. Police are currently conducting raids across various locations in Jamalpur to apprehend the suspect’s wife, who remains at large.
