A 45-year-old mason was brutally murdered in the Monirampur upazila of Jashore late Monday night, allegedly in retaliation for his efforts to protect his teenage granddaughter from harassment.

Inamul Hossain, a resident of Jashore’s Jhikargachha upazila, was returning home from a local market when he was ambushed by a group of assailants. According to his nephew, Saddam Hossain, the victim had been targeted after a local youth named Rabbi, 23, allegedly began harassing a ninth-grade student related to Hossain. When the family reported the harassment to local leaders, including a union parishad member, the situation escalated into a physical altercation, leading to direct threats against Hossain’s life.

Hossain sustained critical injuries during the attack and was rushed to the Jhikargachha Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Jashore General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Monirampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Sayeed confirmed that the killing stemmed from the victim’s opposition to the sexual harassment of his granddaughter. Following the incident, the victim’s wife, Reshma Khatun, filed a formal complaint naming 11 individuals as suspects. Authorities have arrested one person in connection with the murder, and police operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
