Malaysia has officially reopened its labor market to Bangladeshi workers, a development Minister of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Arifful Haque Chowdhury attributed to the government’s recent diplomatic outreach and the Prime Minister’s international engagements.
The Minister confirmed the reopening during a press briefing at the Sylhet Circuit House on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to expand overseas employment opportunities. Since taking office, the current administration has been engaged in consistent negotiations with various nations to secure new labor markets and restore access to previously restricted destinations. The Minister expressed optimism that this latest development serves as a precursor to the reopening of other international labor markets in the near future.

The announcement followed a courtesy meeting between Minister Chowdhury and the United States Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent Christensen. The delegation discussed a range of bilateral issues, including the comprehensive development of the Sylhet region, the significant contributions of the Bangladeshi diaspora—particularly those from Sylhet—to the United States, and strategies to bolster trade and investment.
Reflecting on the meeting, Minister Chowdhury underscored the enduring friendly relations between Bangladesh and the United States. He noted that both nations are working in close cooperation to deepen their partnership and foster economic collaboration. The Minister stated that such diplomatic exchanges are essential to maintaining the momentum of the strategic and economic ties that benefit both countries. The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, Md. Abdur Rahman Torofdar, the acting Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet, Pinky Saha, and other senior administrative officials.
