Lawyer hospitalised after being attacked by client over drug case arrest warrant in Patuakhali

A local lawyer was critically injured after being attacked by his own client in Patuakhali’s Mirzaganj upazila on Sunday night, allegedly following the issuance of an arrest warrant in a narcotics case.

The incident occurred near a sluice gate in Chhalabunia village outside the residence of the victim, Samiul Alim, 44. Alim, who serves as the president of the Kakarabunia Union branch of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was handling a narcotics case on behalf of the accused, Jakir Farazi.

Farazi, a former general secretary of the Mirzaganj upazila unit of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and former joint convener of the Swechchhasebak Dal, had failed to appear in the Mirzaganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Sunday. As a result, the court rejected a time petition filed by his counsel and issued an arrest warrant against him.

According to Alim, who is currently undergoing treatment, he had contacted Farazi earlier in the day to urge him to attend the court hearing. After Farazi declined, citing personal commitments, Alim attempted to seek an extension from the court, which was subsequently denied.

Alim stated that he informed Farazi of the warrant via telephone shortly thereafter. At approximately 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, while Alim was at a local tea stall, Farazi reportedly arrived on a motorcycle and attacked him with a sharp machete. The assault resulted in a severe injury above Alim’s right knee, along with multiple lacerations across his body.

The victim was initially transported to the Mirzaganj Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced medical care.

Efforts to reach Farazi for comment via telephone were unsuccessful.

Mirzaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhiduzzaman confirmed that authorities have received reports of the attack but noted that no formal written or verbal complaint has been filed by the victim or his representatives as of Monday morning.
