Kushtia Student Residents Face Uncertainty After Aging Out of State Care

Five students residing at the Kushtia Government Children’s Home have been discharged after reaching adulthood, leaving them facing significant uncertainty regarding their academic futures. Under current social service department regulations, the state’s obligation to house male residents ends once they turn 18. Although authorities had previously extended their stay on humanitarian grounds, all five individuals—who have long surpassed the age limit—were formally released on Monday.
The students, who are currently enrolled in various academic programs, expressed deep concern over the sudden loss of their housing. For many, the transition comes at a critical juncture; Akash Sheikh and Akash Islam, both currently in their first year of undergraduate studies at Kushtia Government College, are scheduled to begin their final examinations on July 27. Other students, such as Alfaz Hossain, who is in his final year of higher secondary education, are now forced to seek temporary shelter with relatives, fearing that the lack of a stable environment will jeopardize their education and long-term career prospects.

These students arrived at the facility under diverse, often tragic, circumstances. Many lost their fathers at a young age and faced poverty or fractured family structures that necessitated institutional care. For years, they utilized the government facility as a foundation for their academic ambitions, with several achieving notable success in their secondary and higher secondary examinations despite the challenges of their personal histories.
District social service officials confirmed that the decision to discharge the students followed a high-level meeting involving the District Administrator. According to Assistant Director Abdullah Al Sami, the department is mindful of the students’ precarious situation and has provided initial financial assistance. He noted that officials are currently exploring further support mechanisms to ensure the young men can complete their studies.

The Kushtia District Administrator, Touhid Bin-Hasan, underscored that the students’ education remains a top priority. He stated that the administration is actively working toward a sustainable solution, including potential pathways for future employment. As the students attempt to settle into the homes of relatives, they have collectively appealed to authorities to consider the gravity of their situation, requesting continued support until they complete their examinations and gain the independence required to sustain themselves.
