Dhaka BNP leader hospitalized after stabbing by local criminal in Matuail
A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) remains in critical condition after being stabbed in the capital’s Matuail area on Friday. Shamsuddin Khan, known as Kalam, who serves as the joint convener of the party’s ward 65 unit in Dhaka South, was attacked while heading to midday Friday prayers.
According to family members and police, the incident occurred around noon near the Shammimbagh culvert. Kalam was intercepted by a group of three individuals, allegedly led by a local man identified as Rakib Hossain. Witnesses reported that Rakib stabbed Kalam in the back before fleeing the scene.
Kalam was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with the weapon still lodged in his back. Surgeons performed an emergency operation to remove the blade, though the victim had not regained consciousness as of Friday evening. His wife, Shamsun Nahar, stated that her husband, an independent housing developer, had been a target of Rakib’s extortion attempts previously, which included acts of vandalism at his place of business.
Kadamtali Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sajib Kumar Baroi confirmed that Rakib is a known offender with at least four criminal cases pending against him. The suspect had recently been released on bail after serving time in prison.
Authorities believe the attack may have been an act of retaliation. Police reports indicate that Kalam had recently convened a local mediation committee to address Rakib’s past misconduct, an action that reportedly enraged the suspect. Law enforcement officials have launched a manhunt to apprehend Rakib and his accomplices.
