Interior Minister: Cases from Interim Government Era to Be Reviewed

The government has requested district-level data on cases filed following August 5, 2024, during the tenure of the interim government, a move aimed at verification, according to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan.
Khan made the announcement on Wednesday to journalists after a session related to the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, marking the conclusion of a four-day District Commissioners’ (DCs) conference.

The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, was formed on August 8, 2024, after the Awami League was ousted from power following a July uprising. This government remained in office until the formation of the BNP-led government after elections in February.
Khan stated that several cases, including those described as genocide and anti-humanity crimes against “Awami fascism,” were filed in connection with the anti-discrimination movement after August 5. He explained that district commissioners have been asked to provide a count of these cases in their respective districts, noting that while some remote districts might have fewer, metropolitan areas have seen a higher number. The collected information will undergo scrutiny.

The initiative to verify these cases stems from the fact that thousands of individuals have been named as defendants in numerous legal actions. The Home Minister emphasized that these cases will be reviewed to identify the genuine perpetrators, allowing investigators to expedite proceedings and ensure that those who have been “maliciously included” in the cases are granted relief.
Khan assured that the entire process would be conducted through legal channels. When questioned about the deadline for DCs to submit the case information, he indicated “as soon as possible,” though he added that a verbal directive for submission within one month has been issued. He also noted that any delays would be considered in the interest of justice.
