A 35-year-old unidentified youth was beaten up on suspicion of being a thief. The youth died after the thrashing. The incident took place in Singaira area of ​​Angaria Union of Shariatpur Sadar Upazila on Friday morning.

Police are yet to identify the youth. A PBI team could not confirm the identity of the young man even with fingerprints from his body. The body has been kept at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem.

Shariatpur Sadar’s Palang Model Police Station said that Iman Ali Molya, a resident of Ward No. 3 of Angaria Union of Sadar Upazila, earns his living by driving a battery-operated van. A man entered the house in the early hours of Friday night to steal his van. Realizing it, the people of Iman’s house shouted and gathered people. Then the local people arrested the man on suspicion of being a thief. Later he was beaten and left. Then around 12 noon local people left the injured young man in the emergency department of Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. Doctors started treating him. The young man died while undergoing treatment around one o’clock.

Arif Molya, a member of Ward No. 3 of Angaria Union Parishad (UP), told Prothom Alo that the local crowd arrested a person while stealing a van. Later, the agitated people tied him with chains and beat him up. He later died while being taken to the hospital.
