Government bars four city corporation officials from leaving country amid corruption probes

The Local Government Division has ordered immigration authorities to prevent four city corporation officials from leaving the country amid ongoing investigations into allegations of widespread corruption. The directive, issued on July 26, follows intelligence reports suggesting that the officials may attempt to flee abroad to evade accountability.
The officials under scrutiny include Md. Anisur Rahman, a superintending engineer in the mechanical department of the Dhaka South City Corporation, and Kazi Mohammad Borhan Uddin, a former official of the same agency currently transferred to the Barishal City Corporation. Also named are Mohammad Shahin-ul Islam Chowdhury and Farzana Mukta, both engineers with the Chattogram City Corporation, who were recently transferred to Mymensingh and Rangpur, respectively.
Shahin-ul Islam Chowdhury and Farzana Mukta, who are a married couple, face serious allegations of accumulating wealth worth hundreds of millions of taka through systemic corruption, irregularities, and illicit commissions. Formal complaints detailing these activities have been submitted to the ministry.
The confidential directive, signed by Joint Secretary Md. Robiul Islam, was dispatched to the senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the additional inspector general of the Special Branch of police, and the director general of the Department of Immigration and Passports. The order explicitly instructs all immigration checkpoints across the country to monitor these individuals and block any attempt to depart.
In the official correspondence, the Local Government Division emphasized that the restrictive measures are necessary to ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigations. Authorities have been provided with the full names, designations, permanent addresses, and passport details of the four officials to facilitate the enforcement of the travel ban until the probe concludes.
