Gang rivalry over riverbed control leaves one dead in Padma char conflict

A 35-year-old man was killed in a shootout on the Padma River on Tuesday, marking the latest casualty in a violent territorial struggle over sand mining rights near the confluence of Natore, Rajshahi, and Kushtia. The victim, identified as Azizul Haque—a member of the local faction known as the “Kakon Bahini”—was discovered inside a drifting speedboat near the Charjajira area of Lalpur by local residents.
Police recovered the body from the vessel, which was found floating with a canopy near the border of the three districts at approximately 3:30 p.m. Following a preliminary investigation at the scene, law enforcement officials transferred the remains to the Natore Sadar Hospital morgue for a formal autopsy.

According to local reports, the shooting erupted early Tuesday morning as rival factions led by Belal and Kakon clashed over control of the lucrative sand mining operations in the area. This latest fatality brings the death toll to at least five since October, as competing groups continue to battle for dominance over the riverine territory.
The investigation into the homicide has sparked jurisdictional confusion, as the incident occurred at the intersection of three separate sub-districts. Officer-in-Charge Shofiqul Islam of Lalpur Police Station confirmed that while a formal case will be registered in his jurisdiction, the Laxmikunda River Police will lead the investigation due to the nature of the crime scene and the location where the body was recovered. Officers from the Lalpur, Bagha, and Laxmikunda River police units jointly inspected the char area following the discovery of the shooting.
