A sudden gas leak beneath a major thoroughfare in the Foys Lake area of Chittagong triggered a fire on Sunday, sparking alarm among commuters and local residents. The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Zakir Hossain Road, where flames erupted from the pavement, briefly halting traffic and forcing motorists to navigate the area with caution.

Fire service officials from the Agrabad station were dispatched to the scene following an emergency call to the 999 helpline. Upon arrival, crews worked to contain the blaze and secure the perimeter, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby infrastructure.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the fire may have been ignited by a burst light on a utility pole adjacent to the road, which allegedly showered sparks onto the ground where gas was leaking from a ruptured pipeline running through a nearby storm drain. While local observers reported seeing flames shoot from beneath the surface, officials have not yet confirmed the precise ignition source.

The Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company has launched an investigation to determine how the underground pipeline sustained damage. General Manager Md. Tajuddin Dhali stated that crews are currently on-site conducting repairs and assessing the integrity of the network to ensure the safety of the area and restore normal operations.
