Firefighters contain blaze at Old Dhaka warehouse complex

Firefighters have brought a blaze under control at the Haji Abul Bashar Super Market in Old Dhaka’s Chawk Mogoltuli, following a two-hour operation that successfully prevented any casualties. The fire, which broke out Saturday afternoon on the third floor of an eight-story commercial building, prompted an emergency response from the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

According to Anwarul Islam, an official from the fire service’s media cell, the incident began around 1:30 p.m. Six units were dispatched to the scene, eventually managing to contain the flames by 3:15 p.m. While the immediate threat of the fire spreading has been neutralized, officials noted that total extinguishment will require additional time due to the nature of the stored materials.

Assistant Director of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, Kazi Najmuzzaman, confirmed that the affected third-floor storage units contained plastic umbrellas and various electrical goods. Because the shutters of the warehouses were locked at the time of the fire, responding crews were forced to breach the security measures to gain access to the source of the blaze. The task of moving the heavy stock is expected to prolong the cleanup efforts.

Concerns regarding the safety standards of the building were highlighted during the operation. Kazi Najmuzzaman noted that the eight-story structure relies on a single, narrow staircase measuring only two feet in width, creating significant challenges for emergency responders and potentially complicating evacuation procedures. Investigations into the cause of the fire remain ongoing as crews continue to secure the site.
