Farmer killed in land dispute clash in northern Bangladesh

A long-standing land dispute in Bangladesh’s Kurigram district escalated into a fatal clash on Tuesday, leaving one farmer dead and prompting a significant police response in the Rajarhat sub-district.
Forty-five-year-old Jinnat Ali, a resident of Danghat village in the Omar Majid Union, died at the scene after being attacked with local weapons. The incident occurred during a confrontation between two village factions over the excavation of soil near a government road.

According to local reports, the tension stems from a protracted disagreement regarding access to the public thoroughfare. Witnesses stated that the situation turned violent on Tuesday afternoon following a heated verbal altercation. Omar Majid Union Parishad Chairman Ahsanul Kabir Adil noted that the dispute reached a breaking point while Ali was working on his land adjacent to the road, when members of an opposing faction accused him of cutting soil from the roadside.
Rajarhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mamunur Rashid confirmed that authorities have taken ten individuals into custody for questioning in connection with the homicide. While the area remains under police surveillance, officials have deployed additional officers to the village to prevent further instability. Police are currently processing legal actions against the suspects as the investigation continues.
