BSF returns 20 individuals to India following border standoff in Chapainawabganj
Indian border guards have returned 20 individuals to the interior of India following a standoff at the Chouka border in the Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj. The group, consisting of 11 women, five men, and four children, had been pushed toward the Bangladeshi border late Friday night before being intercepted by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
Lieutenant Colonel Tajul Islam Chowdhury, commander of the 59 BGB Battalion, confirmed that the resolution followed two rounds of flag meetings between the two border forces on Saturday. The discussions, held at the company commander level near border pillars 177 and 178, resulted in the Border Security Force (BSF) agreeing to withdraw the individuals back into Indian territory by noon.
The incident began when BSF personnel attempted to push the group across the border under the cover of darkness. Upon detecting the movement, BGB troops blocked their entry, forcing the group to remain in the "no man’s land" area on the Indian side of the international boundary for several hours.
Authorities reported that the border region has since returned to a state of calm. BGB personnel have cleared the area of gathered local residents, and the situation remains under close surveillance by security forces.
