Fourteen Bangladeshi Nationals Repatriated After Illicit Border Crossing into India
Fourteen Bangladeshi nationals, who were detained in India for illegal entry while seeking employment, returned home Friday night through the Benapole border crossing in Jashore. Indian immigration authorities at Petrapole handed the group over to Benapole police at approximately 8:00 p.m. following the completion of formal legal processing.
The returnees, who hail from the Sunamganj, Jashore, and Cox’s Bazar districts, had been arrested by Indian law enforcement after crossing the border without authorization. Following their detention, they were brought before local courts and subsequently transferred to a shelter home managed by an Indian human rights organization.
Their repatriation was facilitated through special travel permits issued by both governments. Legal assistance for the group was provided by the Bangladeshi human rights organization Justice and Care, which played a pivotal role in coordinating their release and return.
Ashraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of the Benapole Port Police Station, confirmed that the individuals were processed through a general diary entry before being released into the custody of the non-governmental organization.
Apurba Kumar Saha, regional manager for Justice and Care, noted that the citizens had been detained at different intervals after entering India illegally. After receiving support in the Indian shelter homes, the organization managed the logistics of their homecoming, ensuring each individual was safely reunited with their respective families upon arrival in Bangladesh.
