Police in Savar have initiated a case under the Explosives Act following a blast at a political rally held by the Jatiya Nagarik Party (NCP) on Monday night. The case, filed against unidentified individuals, suggests the potential involvement of an organized, banned group in the attack.
The legal complaint was lodged by Mohammad Salamat Ullah, member secretary of the party's Dhaka North district unit. According to Additional Superintendent of Police for Dhaka District, Mohammad Jahangir Alam, no suspects have been formally arrested or detained thus far. Authorities have questioned three to four individuals in connection with the incident as part of an ongoing investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The incident occurred during the NCP’s "July March" program, which took place at the Tarapur Eidgah grounds in Savar. According to the case details, central leaders—including party convener and opposition chief whip Md. Nahid Islam, member secretary Akhtar Hossain, and northern region organizer Sarjis Alam—arrived at the venue around 9:30 p.m.
Minutes before the leadership reached the stage, the power supply to the venue was cut, plunging the rally into darkness. While organizers attempted to restore power using a generator, the lighting remained inadequate. At approximately 9:42 p.m., while the leaders were addressing the crowd, an explosion occurred just 10 to 15 feet in front of the stage, filling the area with thick white smoke.
The blast triggered a stampede among the attendees, resulting in several injuries. The lawsuit alleges that the perpetrators acted with the intent to assassinate the party's central leadership and the gathering's participants. Following the disruption, NCP activists abandoned the rally and proceeded to the Savar Model Police Station to initiate legal action.
