Empty coffin found floating in Mymensingh river triggers local concern

Residents of Marichar char village in Mymensingh’s Ishwarganj upazila were gripped by fear and curiosity Monday morning after an empty coffin was discovered floating in the Brahmaputra River. The object, which appeared on the water’s surface around 8:00 a.m., quickly drew crowds of perplexed onlookers.
Local resident Abdul Awal retrieved the coffin from the river and brought it to his home out of curiosity, only to find the interior entirely vacant. Acting on the advice of neighbors who were unnerved by the discovery, Awal returned the coffin to the river, where it was swept away by the current. Awal later expressed regret over the decision, noting that he had brought the object home without fully considering the implications.

Other residents suggested that the coffin likely drifted downstream from a distant location, though its origins remain a mystery. The unusual sight sparked widespread speculation and unease among the local community, who remain baffled as to how such an item came to be discarded in the waterway.
Officer-in-Charge of Ishwarganj Police Station, Md. Rabiul Azam, confirmed that while law enforcement was aware of the incident through local reports, no formal complaint had been filed. Police officials noted that as the coffin was returned to the river and carried away by the current, the situation effectively resolved itself without further intervention.
