Dhaka University Unveils 20-Year Strategic Plan for Institutional Transformation

University of Dhaka Vice-Chancellor Professor A.S.M. Maksud Kamal has unveiled an ambitious 20-year strategic roadmap, titled the “Dhaka University Academic Plan (2026-46),” aimed at transforming the institution into a global hub for inclusive innovation and ethical leadership ahead of its 125th anniversary. Addressing the annual Senate meeting at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Monday, the Vice-Chancellor detailed a comprehensive strategy structured across five distinct phases to be implemented over the next two decades.
The roadmap begins with an “Ownership Phase” from 2026 to 2028, designed to ensure institutional commitment, followed by an “Acceleration Phase” through 2033 to expedite structural and operational advancements. Subsequent stages include a “Transformation Phase” focusing on visible changes in education and administration, a “Renaissance Phase” dedicated to the revival of knowledge and values, and a final “Inspiration Phase,” which aims to establish the university as a premier academic benchmark both nationally and internationally by 2046.

According to Professor Kamal, this strategic framework is built upon 11 core pillars, including leadership, research and innovation, modernizing education, entrepreneurship, and administrative excellence. The plan emphasizes fostering a campus culture rooted in ethics, inclusion, and the preservation of national heritage, with a specific focus on making research the university’s central engine while ensuring that administration and education are future-oriented.
To support these long-term objectives, the university administration has proposed the creation of two substantial endowment funds, each totaling 1,000 crore taka. One fund is earmarked for advancing research initiatives, while the second is intended for student welfare programs. The Vice-Chancellor underscored the vital role of alumni contributions in this effort, noting that such financial support is essential to overcoming current limitations, which include significant shortages in student housing, inadequate classroom infrastructure, and a lack of sufficient research funding.

During the session, the Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the existing challenges currently hindering the university’s potential, particularly regarding laboratory facilities and overall academic capacity. By organizing the alumni network more effectively and securing these financial endowments, the administration hopes to address these systemic hurdles and modernize the campus environment. The Senate meeting was attended by university pro-vice-chancellors, the treasurer, acting registrar, and several members of parliament, alongside faculty, staff, and representatives of the university’s syndicate.
