Dhaka Court Sends Titumir College Student to Jail in Anti-Terrorism Case

A Dhaka court ordered the imprisonment of a 25-year-old student, Md. Nazim Uddin Doula, on Friday following his arrest at Government Titumir College in the capital. The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam after police produced the suspect in connection with an ongoing investigation under the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Explosives Substances Act.

According to the case records, the charges stem from an incident on September 20, when a protest against the interim government took place at the intersection of roads 11 and 6 in the Banani area, accompanied by reports of improvised explosive device detonations. Authorities identified Nazim, a native of Roumari in Kurigram, as a suspect in the matter and apprehended him on the college campus on Thursday.

Defense attorney Farzana Yasmin, who confirmed the court’s decision, had petitioned for bail during the hearing. She argued that her client is not involved in political activities and was detained by a group of individuals who beat him before handing him over to the police as he exited an examination hall.

The prosecution reported that Nazim sustained injuries during a struggle at the time of his arrest. Following an assessment at Kurmitola General Hospital, he was transferred into police custody. Investigation officer and Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Md. Kamal Hossain requested that the court hold the defendant in custody pending further proceedings, a request the magistrate ultimately granted after denying the defense’s bail application.
