Dhaka Court Grants Three-Day Remand for Former European University Trustee in Vandalism Case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday granted a three-day remand for Professor Mokbul Ahmed Khan, the former chairman of the European University of Bangladesh (EUB) board of trustees, and another individual, Md. Nishar Uddin Akash, following their arrest in connection with a criminal case at Darus Salam Police Station. The two men are accused of obstructing government officials, damaging property, theft, and intimidation.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Ismail issued the order after a hearing where the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Nazmul Hasan Khan, sought a ten-day remand for the suspects. While defense attorneys requested that the remand be denied and the defendants granted bail, the court ultimately sided with the prosecution’s request for a three-day period of detention.

The charges stem from an incident on July 20, when a group of 20 to 25 people allegedly forced their way into the first and second floors of the European University campus in Gabtoli. According to the case statement filed by university IT officer Rafiul Islam, the group breached the offices of the government-appointed board of administrators. The suspects are accused of breaking the seals on two locked rooms and ransacking the premises, resulting in an estimated 50,000 taka in property damage.

Police apprehended the suspects in early morning raids on Wednesday, with Mokbul Ahmed Khan arrested in the Dhanmondi area and Nishar Uddin Akash taken into custody in Gabtoli. Darus Salam Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Dulal confirmed the arrests, noting that the suspects were detained based on the specific allegations outlined in the case file.

Beyond the current charges, authorities noted that Mokbul Ahmed Khan is also facing ongoing legal proceedings involving two separate cases filed at the Gopalganj Sadar Police Station. The plaintiff in the university case, Rafiul Islam, declined to comment further on the matter.
