A Dhaka court has denied a bail plea for television actor Mohammad Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, known professionally as Zaher Alvi, in connection with a case filed over the death of his wife. Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahjahan Kabir issued the order on Monday following a hearing in which the state opposed the defendant’s release.

Alvi surrendered to the court on June 18, at which point he was ordered into judicial custody. Following his initial imprisonment, police moved to secure a 10-day remand, which resulted in a two-day custodial interrogation period granted by the court on June 24. He was returned to jail on June 30 following the conclusion of that remand.

The legal proceedings stem from an incident on February 28, when relatives discovered Alvi’s wife, Ikra, hanging from a ceiling fan at their residence in the Mirpur DOHS area of Dhaka. She was transported to Kurmitola General Hospital, where attending physicians declared her dead.

Following the death, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case at the Pallabi Police Station, alleging that systemic domestic abuse and persistent family disputes drove his daughter to suicide. The couple, who were married in 2010 and have one son, had been the subject of long-standing conflict, according to the charges.

While the court denied bail for the actor, the same case saw a different outcome for his mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuli. She surrendered to the court on June 4 and was subsequently granted bail.
