Court Denies Bail for Haridas Chandra in 9.35 Million Taka Money Laundering Case

Haridas Chandra Tarani Das, a figure recently thrust into the public eye over the construction of a controversial 81-foot statue in Gaibandha, was remanded to prison on Thursday following the conclusion of a four-day interrogation period. The Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Court, presided over by Judge Jashita Islam, denied a bail plea submitted by the defense, opting instead to keep the accused in custody as investigations into his financial activities continue.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police, represented by Financial Crime Unit Inspector K.M. Rakibul Huda, had requested that Das remain incarcerated. According to court filings, investigators secured critical information during the initial round of questioning regarding the origins of large sums deposited into Das’s bank and mobile financial service accounts. Authorities are currently verifying the sources of these funds and tracking their subsequent transfer and expenditure. Prosecutors argued that granting bail at this juncture would compromise the integrity of the ongoing probe.

The charges against Das center on allegations of money laundering involving approximately 93.5 million taka. CID investigators first apprehended him on the night of July 12 in Gaibandha, subsequently charging him under the Money Laundering Prevention Act at the Uttara West Police Station in Dhaka. Initial inquiries into nine bank accounts linked to Das revealed that significant, non-business-related funds were funneled into his possession from various individuals across the country.

Beyond the pending case in Dhaka, CID officials confirmed that Das is also named in a separate criminal case filed at the Fulbaria Police Station in Mymensingh. Following the court’s decision on Thursday, Das’s defense attorney, Shyamal Kumar, acknowledged the denial of the bail application. Under heavy police security, the accused was transferred from the courtroom to the prison holding cell.
