Clashes over sacrificial meat distribution leave 30 injured at Eid prayer ground

A violent clash broke out between two rival factions in Faridpur’s Bhanga upazila on Thursday morning over the logistics of distributing sacrificial meat, leaving at least 30 people injured and several homes damaged. The confrontation occurred at the Purba Aruakandi Eidgah ground in Algi Union just as residents were gathering for Eid-ul-Adha prayers.
The dispute centered on the long-standing local tradition of pooling portions of sacrificial meat destined for the poor. Tension mounted between the local Molla and Matubbar factions—led by Kamruzzaman Molla and Jahangir Matubbar, respectively—as members debated whether the distribution should be centralized at the local mosque or handled individually from private homes.

The argument quickly escalated into physical violence before the Eid prayers could commence. Witnesses reported that participants abandoned the prayer ground to arm themselves with machetes, wooden staves, and bricks, engaging in a chaotic series of running battles. During the unrest, four to five residential properties were vandalized, forcing many families to flee in panic.
Local officials expressed dismay that a communal celebration was marred by such discord. Mjibor Molla, a local union council member, noted that the fighting broke out even before the scheduled Eid prayers or the ritual slaughter of animals had taken place.

Bhanga Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident, stating that law enforcement arrived promptly to disperse the crowd and restore order. While approximately 30 people sustained injuries during the skirmish, officials reported that none of the victims required hospital admission, with most receiving only basic medical care. Following the police intervention, the atmosphere in the village stabilized, allowing residents to proceed with their Eid prayers and animal sacrifices later in the day.
