Ceiling collapse at Bagerhat court leaves five injured amid structural safety concerns

At least five people were injured Monday when a section of the ceiling plaster collapsed inside the Bagerhat District and Sessions Judge Court building. The incident occurred shortly after midday in a corridor outside the Kochua courtroom, located on the ground floor of the judicial complex, causing widespread panic among litigants and court staff.
Witnesses reported that the corridor was crowded with people waiting for their hearings when the concrete and plaster suddenly gave way. Court officials quickly transported the five injured victims—identified as Suman Das, 45, Hriday Howlader, 26, Habibullah Sheikh, 28, Md. Firoz Sheikh, 65, and Motaleb Hossain, 48—to the Bagerhat 250-bed District Hospital using official transport.

Dr. Sheikh Adnan Hossain, a medical officer at the hospital, confirmed that while the victims sustained injuries to their heads, necks, and limbs, none of their conditions are considered life-threatening. Bagerhat district and sessions judges visited the hospital shortly after the incident to assess the victims’ status and oversee their care.
The structural failure has renewed concerns regarding the safety of the aging three-story courthouse. Public Prosecutor M.M. Mahabub Morshed Lalon noted that the building has deteriorated significantly over time, with visible cracks appearing in various sections that require urgent repairs.

Legal practitioners and staff have expressed deep concern over the safety of the facility, which serves thousands of visitors, lawyers, and judiciary personnel daily. According to Ashok Mondal, an assistant to a local lawyer, the corridor remains hazardous as large cracks are still visible in the ceiling near the site of the collapse. While structural repairs were conducted on the building’s pillars several years ago, advocates are now calling for a comprehensive inspection and immediate renovation to prevent further casualties.
