Islam, a resident of the Jalma Union in Botiaghata upazila, was known locally as “Dhakaiya Rafiq.” While party officials identified him as a member of the Botiaghata upazila BNP’s convening committee and a former assistant general secretary of the Fatulla Thana Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, police have maintained a more cautious stance regarding his political profile. Deputy Commissioner of the Khulna Metropolitan Police, Rezaur Rahman, noted that the victim primarily resided in Dhaka and was involved in the stone trade.

The brazen nature of the attack has sent shockwaves through the local community, coming at a time when city authorities are conducting special joint operations to combat rising levels of extortion, drug trafficking, and organized crime.
